Thesis Project>> An Intimate Environment Through Furniture

Thesis Statement: I created an intimate living environment using furniture that exhibits warmth, entices touch, and exudes a deeper meaning by creating an increased connection between the user, the maker, the material and consequently, nature.

Other Goals: Subsequent goals that evolved were transportability and  multi-functionality.  Transportability was essential for logistics, with each piece able to dissemble and comfortably fit into a small car.  The multi-functionality aspect is best exemplified in the ottomans where two simple pieces can perform a variety of functions.

Hall Table

This hall table is the piece which best exemplifies transportability. The cherry leg assemblies are locked with a cross piece on the bottom.  The spruce top then slides over this and is fastened with four removable pin joints.  The piece can be assembled in approximately 30 seconds and dissembles into a compact pile for ease of transportation. The table is designed to go in an entryway, with the purpose of holding keys and other essential items.   The piece was also an example of how quickly a quality piece of furniture can be built, only taking 2 days to construct.

Floor Lamp

This piece is inspired  by a traditional Japanese style floor lamp.  There are three separate sections, derived using the Golden Mean. They are built out of cherry and are held together by a spine in the back.  The spine hides the electrical wiring with a removable spline.  The sections are connected to the spine using shoulder bolts and threaded inserts.  The  shade sections are made of Sitka Spruce with reinforced shoji paper.    At a height of 79 inches, the lamp is the main focal point of light in the room, adding a warm glow to the surrounding pieces.

Room Divider

This piece is a play on the traditional Japanese style room divider.  The piece is made of three spruce frames which are joined with a combination of a mortise and tenon joint with removable copper pins.  A simple grid of spruce pieces is covered with white washable shoji paper on one side.  Red paper is used to add color to the space.  The frames are connected with custom made copper hinges with a removable barrel bolt.  The hinges allow each section to swivel freely and while apart, the screen can fit into standard sized sedan for transport.

Ottomans

This pair of pieces was designed with both multi-functionality and individuality in mind.  Individuality stems from the single piece of curly California Walnut used for the top and side of the pieces with a slight natural edge on one side.  Multi-functionality allows the user to transform the pieces to fit their needs; from a small sitting area with a seat and side table (front) to a coffee table or pair of side tables (middle) or a double ottoman or multi-seating arrangement.  Copper accents add strength and compliment the color of the walnut.

Chair and a Half

The “chair and a half” is aptly named as it is between the size of a love seat and a couch. Essentially, it is made for two people who “like each other.”  Similar to the rest of the pieces, this piece disassembles into 5 sections for easy transportation using eight removable Cocobolo pins.   This chair was designed with ergonomics as the driving force.  It is full height, supporting the neck and head.  The seat height and arm rests are at ideal heights for the average person, to facilitate getting in and out of the chair and maintaining comfort.
