Program: The San Donino Incinerator is a trash incinerator on the outskirts of Florence which sticks out like a sore thumb although the spaces inside have amazing potential. Being that Florence lacks concert venues, the incinerator trash holding area would be an ideal space for a concert hall. To “reverse” the impact this building had on the environment, the new program includes using the towers to compost waste and using the methane gas to help power the city.
Concept/Design Approch: We decided to keep the majority of the original building in place and built a skin on top of it. This skin, which resembles a Printed Circuit Board, architecturally expresses the technology inside the building. Angular elements created a diversity of spaces and allowed for underground entry into the building. These elements also make an overhang that acts as the exterior concert area which takes advantage of the climate.
