Program: This project is a Botanical Garden Visitor Center located near San Luis Obispo, CA. There was an emphasis on sustainability, which greatly impacted the design. The program includes offices, a visitor information center, a lecture hall, classrooms, as well as two main exhibition areas.
Concept/Design Approach: The concept for the design was that of a rock, broken into three pieces, with the breaks of the pieces creating the different spaces. I chose this due to the large amount of rocks similar to this on the site. I paid particular attention to sun orientation while designing and the design includes operable fins on the east and west facades. The towers are to be used for heating and cooling with the large openings allowing for natural light to saturate most of the building.
